Fort Dodge, IA – The Indian Hills Women's Soccer team extended its winning streak to four matches on Wednesday as the Warriors took down Iowa Central Community College 2-1 on the road. The win pushes the Warriors' overall record to 7-2-0 on the year.
Indian Hills, who appeared in the national rankings for the first time in two week, built a two-goal advantage with a pair of strikes in the second half to fend off the Tritons. The Warriors have allowed two goals or less in all nine of its matches this year and are outscoring their opponents 29-7.
After a scoreless first half between both sides, sophomore Maika Nchana (Barcelona, Spain/INS Torras I Bages) put the Warriors on the board first as Nana Tanikawa (Kawasaki, Japan/Takatsu) forced a turnover deep in the Warriors' offensive end. Tanikawa played a ball to Arnicka Louis (Castries, Saint Lucia/Sir Ira Simmons) who threaded a pass through the defense to allow Nchana to convert the one-timer.
The Warriors doubled the lead less than 12 minutes later as Tanikawa was on the receiving end of a well-executed possession. Freshman Aubree Boyd (Montrose, IA/Central Lee) found Nchana near the midfield line who in turn delivered a low-lying through ball to beat the defense and find a streaking Tanikawa. The freshman beat the outstretched arms of the Iowa Central keeper to extend the lead to 2-1.
Iowa Central responded with a goal nearly five minutes later, but the Warrior defense, anchored by sophomore María Melendez (Aragua, Venezuela/Aragua Estudiantil) in net stood down the stretch to preserve the win.
Melendez stopped a pair of shots in the victory for the Warriors to earn her 12th career victory, tied for fourth-most in a career in school history.
The Warriors return to action Friday night in Spencer, IA with a road trip to Iowa Lakes Community College, set for a 6:00 PM kick-off. The Warriors follow up their trip to the Lakers with a home date on Sunday afternoon against Jefferson College (MO) at 12:30 PM as part of a doubleheader with the Indian Hills men's squad.
