Ottumwa -- Down 2-0 late in the first half to visiting Hesston (Kans.) College, Indian Hills pulled even on a second-half goal by Vera Aal Flood and then, two minutes later, got a go-ahead score by Lexi Vaughn to post a 3-2 victory on Thursday.
Flood had tallied the first goal for Indian Hills late in the opening half, and she assisted on Vaughn's game-winner as the Warriors improved to 7-5 on the season.
Allison Ebersole's unassisted goal in the 25th minute started the scoring for Hesston. Not quite nine minutes later, Machi Kanematsu banged home a goal off the cross bar and over IHCC goalkeeper Marta Lopez to make it 2-0 in favor of the Larks.
Flood gave Indian Hills the offensive spark it needed when she converted a pass from Olivia Pargeon in the 41st minute to slice Hesston's lead in half.
"We just didn't play very well in the first half," said IHCC coach Stephanie Gale. "The girls seemed to get their energy back up and got out in front. From there, the match really got tough with both teams turning up the intensity level."
Vaughn set up Flood for the tying goal early in the second half. Then, two minutes later, Vaughn scored the eventual game-deciding goal with Flood getting an assist, to go along with her earlier goals.
Gale said, "I end up challenging the team almost every time to play a better match in the second half. Fortunately, most of the time they respond to the challenge."
IHCC outshot Hesston, 22-11, led by six shots by Pargeon, four from both Flood and Vaughn and three from Hannah Mitchell. Indian Hills keeper Lopez had three saves. Jaymee Bowers had seven saves for the visitors.
Indian Hills returns to conference play on Saturday in a contest at Iowa Lakes, a team the Warriors defeated 4-2 earlier in the season.
