St. Louis, Missouri -- Indian Hills played 13th-rated Lewis & Clark CC on nearly even terms after the first part of Sunday's game, but the Warriors couldn't dig out of an early hole and lost to the Trailblazers, 6-0. The match was IHCC's second is as many days in St. Louis -- they defeated St. Louis CC, 2-1, on Saturday -- and their second against a ranked opponent in five days.
Lewis & Clark got two goals apiece from Nicole Howard, Cassidy Foley and Kaley Hill and outshot the Warriors 16-2 in getting their 11th win of the fall. Indian Hills is 5-4 heading into a contest at Lincoln College on Thursday.
"The girls came out a little slow," according to IHCC coach Stephanie Gale, "and we got punished on that. It took roughly 15-to-20 minutes to finally play our game, and once we did the game was pretty much an even battle."
Lewis & Clark tallied five of their goals in the opening half, and then "we played right alongside them, and we even had some good chances," Gale said. "It was great to see the team not give up and keep fighting with pride. After the game, our opponents congratulated our players on how they kept fighting. For these girls to play two nationally-ranked teams in the space of five days shows a lot of character for this young group. Although this score doesn't reflect how we played, we can take a lot of confidence out of these games."
Lewis & Clark's Howard opened the scoring early in the first half and added another goal, also in the opening half. She leads NJCAA Division I in goals with 31 on the season.
