Women's Soccer Takes 1st Match in St. Louis

St. Louis, Missouri -- On a two-game road trip to St. Louis, Indian Hills won its first match on Saturday, defeating St. Louis CC, 2-1.

According to coach Stephanie Gale, the Warriors came out on fire and outshot the hosts 25-1, but weren't able to capitalize on the many chances they had to score. Fourteen of their 25 shots were on target, including a strike by Sophie Woods in the first half that hit the post.

IHCC opened the scoring on a goal by Lexi Vaughn, who found the back of the net from better than 25 yards out, tucking the ball into the top corner of the net.

The Warriors broke a 1-all tie in the second half, when right-back Rilee Miller scored with about 16 minutes remaining. Miller, Gale said, pushed the ball up the field and was able to play it into the box hard and low, just like the Warriors had worked on in practice.

The win was a good way to begin the weekend, according to Gale. "We had a pretty healthy squad with most of the players who had been injured returning, so we were able to rotate and get girls back into the rhythm of the game," the IHCC coach said. "The girls did extremely well at keeping the ball and switching play. We got the outside backs involved, and it was great to see them push up into the attack."

"It was great to see the girls rewarded with the win, when they played the way we practiced. It's always exciting as a coach when you see the excitement in their face when the hard work pays off."

The Warriors play their second ranked team of the week when they battle Lewis & Clark, rated 13th in the nation, on Sunday afternoon.
