English Soccer Standout Humphrys Signs

Ottumwa -- Amy Humphrys, expected to be a midfielder/striker on the Indian Hills women's soccer team, has committed to play for the Warriors and new coach Stephanie Gale. Humphrys, who is from York in North Yorkshire, a small city in the northern part of England, is excited about the chance to attend Indian Hills and play for the Warriors, starting this fall.

"I chose to come to Indian Hills because of the opportunities it offers me," Humphrys said. "Coach Stephanie has great plans for the women's soccer team and I felt I wanted to be a part of those plans. The academic courses will give me a good foundation as I hope to focus on either social sciences or education. The information the coach has given me and what I have obtained from the (college) website made me feel comfortable that it will be a great place to be."

Humphrys began playing soccer, or "football" as it's called in England, at the age of eight. She played for the local club, Fulford FC, and also spent time with the North Yorkshire Girls' Centre of Excellence. The future IHCC Warrior currently plays for the York College women's team and the York City Ladies.

In addition to her playing career, Humphrys is also a referee, and she came to Minneapolis last summer to referee in the USA Cup.

"I am excited about a new life in the USA this fall where I will be playing soccer as part of a great team and have the opportunity to study at a good college," Humphrys said. "I will gain so much from this experience as I will develop my soccer skills, progress academically and also have the chance to experience the American college way of life. I can't wait to get there and meet everyone and become part of IHCC."

When asked what she likes about Humphrys' game, coach Gale said, "Amy has great speed, and I know she will work extremely hard and is a player who will not stop until the final whistle. She shows a great deal of commitment to all the tasks she starts. Her game management is top notch. Her technical ability to either slow down or speed up the play is great. She is trustworthy on the ball and, most importantly, I can see her coming in and being a great leader."

Gale added that she envisions Humphrys as being a key player for the Indian Hills program and she is excited to get the IHCC recruit settled into a new lifestyle in the US.
