Jackson Bugdalski Takes Mickelson Award

Viera, Florida -- Indian Hills' Jackson Bugdalski added to his list of honors by being named the winner of the 2016 Phil Mickelson Award as the most outstanding freshman golfer in NJCAA Division I men's golf. The award was presented to Bugdalski at this week's NJCAA National Championship.

The Phil Mickelson Award, named for the legendary PGA golfer, is the latest accolade for Bugdalski, a native of Kings Langley, Australia.

He also garnered Ping All-District and first-team Ping All-American honors and was named to the Golf Coaches Association of America All-Freshman team. His 5th place finish at the just-concluded national tournament earned Bugdalski first-team All-American status by the NJCAA. And he is a finalist for the 2016 NJCAA Jack Nicklaus National Player of the year award. The winner of the Nicklaus Award will be announced June 2.

Bugdalski played in six rounds for the Warriors last fall and posted a scoring average of 71.0. Then, he put together one of the best spring seasons in school history, averaging 70.45 for 20 rounds, 11 of which were under par and another four at even par. He finished first or tied for first in five of seven meets this spring and his lowest result was a tie for 5th.

He wound up 5th at the NJCAA national tourney, tied with teammate Trevor Ullestad at 279. His tournament included a 7-under 65 in the opening round and 5-under 67 in round three.

With Bugdalski claiming the Mickelson Award for 2016, Indian Hills has now had three winners of the coveted award. Steven Ihm won it in 2011 and Ben Ludlam took the honor in 2012.
