Champs Again!

Newton, Kansas -- Make room in the trophy case at the Hellyer Student Life Center. For the fourth time in the past five springs, the Indian Hills golf team is bringing back the championship trophy from the NJCAA Division I national tournament. And, just like last year when the Warriors won the crown by leading after each of the four rounds in the tourney, Indian Hills led from wire-to-wire in the 2015 event, played at the Sand Creek Station Golf Course.

Indian Hills took a two-shot lead into Friday's final 18 holes and won by three strokes over Eastern Florida State and McLennan (Tex.). Eastern Florida won a playoff with McLennan to grab the No. 2 spot. Odessa (Tex.), the nation's top-ranked team going into the tournament, finished fourth, nine shots behind the Warriors, and Wallace State (Ala.) was 21 in back of IHCC in the fifth spot in the team standings.

The Warriors were forced to overcome some adversity though in the final round. They found themselves trailing Eastern Florida by three shots after the first 12 holes. But, as they had done, all week, the Warriors were solid on the final six holes and pulled out the victory.

Jakob Garstecki and George Trujillo were the two sophomores back from IHCC's 2014 title-winning team and they both gained All-American status after finishing in the top ten in the '15 event. Garstecki wound up in a three-way tie for sixth after a final-round 74, the best score on the day for the Warriors. His total of 287 was one-under par for the tournament.

Garstecki was especially strong on the par-3 holes, playing them in two-under par for the tourney, better than anyone else in the field. And he tied for the most birdies with 18.

Trujillo shot a 291, three-over par for the week, shooting a 76 in the fourth round. He tied for 10th place overall.

Trevor Ullestad used a three-over 75 in the last round to finish in a tie for 16th at 294. He was the third IHCC All-American.

Luis Acevedo matched Trujillo's 76 over the last round and had a 296 to tie for 21st place.

Andrew Huseman, the third Indian Hills freshman along with Ullestad and Acevedo, ended the tournament with a 79 and an even 300 total.

Odessa's Vetle Maroy was the meet medalist with a seven-under 271, two shots better than Kerry Sweeney and Michael DeMorat, both from Eastern Florida.

The Warriors played steady golf to capture the team title that matched the one they won when the tourney was played at Sand Creek Station back in 2012, protecting the two-stroke advantage they took into Friday. Over the final round, IHCC had 10 birdies and 52 pars. That means their four top golfers made par or better on 62 of the final 72 holes.

It was six bogeys, however, that forced IHCC to come from behind for the win. Three bogeys on the 10th hole and three more over the next three holes put the Warriors behind momentarily. Birdies by Garstecki and Trujillo on the 13th got them back on track.

For the week, the Warriors led the rest of the field in playing the par-3 holes in nine-over par and the par 4s in plus-seven. Their performance on the par-3s was three shots better than McLennan and they were six strokes lower than Eastern Florida on the par-4 holes.

Indian Hills has now won a total of five national golf titles. They won the 2000 NJCAA Division II championship before adding to it with their impressive streak over the last five years.
