Creston, IA – The Indian Hills Softball team split an Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) doubleheader on the road Thursday afternoon with Southwestern Community College. The Warriors fell in game one, 15-12, before battling back for a 15-5 victory in the nightcap.
The Warriors move to 19-22 overall on the year and 6-4 in league play with the split. Indian Hills currently sits in third place in the ICCAC with six conference games remaining in the regular season.
An early deficit for the Warriors put game one out of reach despite a valiant rally in the seventh inning. Trailing 15-8 in the final frame, Indian Hills plated four runs but the early hole proved too costly for the Warriors.
Sophomores Chandler Houselog (Dubuque, IA/Dubuque Hempstead) and Avery Kies (Iowa City, IA/Regina Catholic) were joined by freshman Kate Hickenbottom (Davenport, IA/Davenport Assumption) with three hits apiece in the opener. Houselog drove in four runs in the loss.
The Warriors flipped the script in game two as Indian Hills struck first with five runs in the top half of the first inning. The Warriors tacked on four more runs in both the third and fourth innings to put the game out of reach and hand the Spartans the run-rule shortened defeat.
Sophomore Mary-Paige Withers (Le Claire, IA/Pleasant Valley) paced the offense with four hits, including a home run and two doubles. The sophomore scored three times while driving in four more. The multi-hit effort for Withers was the sophomore's sixth such game over the team's last nine contests, boasting a .500 batting average during the stretch.
Hickenbottom went the distance in the circle for the Warriors to move to 3-0 overall on the year. The freshman struck out four batters in the win.
Next up for the Warriors is a trip to Iowa Western Community College for an ICCAC doubleheader on April 19. First pitch is set for 12:00 PM.
