Overland Park, KS – The Indian Hills Softball team got back on track with a doubleheader sweep on Sunday afternoon, taking both ends of the twinbill against Johnson County Community College (KS). The Warriors rallied late to take game one 6-5, before dropping the Cavaliers 14-1 in the nightcap.
The Warriors secured their first doubleheader sweep of the season to improve to 11-17 overall on the year. Indian Hills pounded out 21 total hits on the day to outlast the Cavaliers. With the game two win, Indian Hills has now scored 14 runs in a game four times this season and are 7-2 overall when scoring double-digit runs.
Johnson County struck first in the opener with an early 3-0 lead through four innings. Indian Hills got on the board in the fifth as Kaitlyn Taylor (Sterling, IL/Sterling) scored on a Cavalier error. The Warrior offense came to life in the sixth inning with four runs to take their first lead of the ballgame. Sophomore Mary-Paige Withers (Le Claire, IA/Pleasant Valley) opened the attack with a solo home run while Emma Scully (West Des Moines, IA/Valley) added a two-run single for the 5-3 advantage.
Johnson County answered back with two runs in the bottom half of the sixth to even the game. Entering the top of the seventh, sophomore Chandler Houselog (Dubuque, IA/Dubuque Hempstead) delivered a lead-off home run for the eventual game-winning run. Sophomore Maggie Grant (Onaway, MI/Inland Lakes) delivered a 1-2-3 innings in the final frame to secure the complete game victory for the Warriors.
Kate Hickenbottom (Davenport, IA/Davenport Assumption) tallied two hits in the game one win as nine different Warriors recorded at least one base knock. Grant struck out three batters while scattering seven hits for her seventh win of the year.
The Warriors rolled to the victory in game two thanks to an 11-run second inning. A three-run home run from sophomore Cassandra Benberg (Green Bay, WI/Pulaski) highlighted the frame while freshman Bailey Tegeler (Dixon, IL/Dixon) tallied a pair of run-scoring base hits in the frame.
Tegeler recorded a career-high four base hits in the win while scoring three runs. Benberg and freshman Madisyn Buysse (Geneseo, IL/Geneseo) each added two hits to aid the 11-hit attack for the Warriors.
Hickenbottom, making her first career start in the circle, kept the Cavaliers at bay with four solid innings of work. The freshman scattered five hits with just one earned run allowed for her first-career victory.
The Warriors return home to take on Highland Community College (KS) at R.L. Hellyer Field on March 25. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM.
