Ottumwa, IA – Former Indian Hills Softball standout Breanna Newton (Bettendorf, IA/Bettendorf) will continue her academic and athletic career at the University of Central Missouri, an NCAA Division II program in Warrensburg, MO.
A two-year member of the Warrior softball program, Newton helped rewrite the record books during the 2021 and 2022 campaigns. Newton appeared in 104 career games out of a possible 110 contests for the Warriors. Newton joined elite company as a sophomore, becoming a member of both the 100-hit and 100-RBI club after batting .385 on the year.
Newton connected on 28 home runs over the last two seasons, including a career-best 16 as a sophomore, a total that contributed to the Warriors' school record 126 this past season. For her efforts as a sophomore, Newton was named to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) DI Softball All-Region XI First-Team.
"We are excited that Bre has found her next stop to continue her playing career," stated head coach Lindsay Diehl. "While Bre was here, we watched her grow on both sides of her game but I enjoyed even more how she grew as a person. I absolutely loved coaching her and I know she will step right in at Central Missouri and be ready to be a leader and contribute to their lineup."
Newton noted the opportunities at Indian Hills that led to the ability to move on to the next level. "Indian Hills helped me prepare for the next level through the support they gave me as well as the confidence they had in me to achieve my goals."
Newton will join a UCM Jennies program that has won at least 30 games in three of its last four full complete seasons. Head coach Susan Anderson recently completed her 15th season at the helm of the Jennies and has won nearly 600 games throughout her career.
"I chose Central Missouri because I loved the coaching staff and the opportunities they had for me both in softball and with my education," Newton added.
Newton graduated from Indian Hills following the spring semester and was a four-time member of the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) All-Academic First-Team for maintaining a GPA of 3.5 or better. Newton also earned NJCAA All-Academic Third-Team honors and was a member of the 2021 and 2022 NJCAA Academic Teams of the Year.
Newton will study Criminal Justice and Criminology at Central Missouri.
Newton becomes the seventh member of the 2022 Warrior program to sing with a four-year school.
