Waukee, IA – The Indian Hills Shotgun Sports squad put together a solid all-around performance at the Simpson Invite over the weekend. Overall, the Warriors' placed sixth with 1,509 targets.
The Warriors competed across all four disciplines at the New Pioneer Gun Club – trap, sporting clays, skeet, and super sporting clays with a number of individuals producing impressive performances. Competing against teams from Iowa, Nebraska, and Missouri, more than 140 individuals took on nearly 50,000 clay targets over the course of the weekend.
"Overall, I believe the weekend was a success," stated head coach Jake Stalzer. "It was great to get the opportunity to shoot all the disciplines this weekend and go up against some tough four-year competition and multiple former national champions as the only junior college program at the invite. We were not going up there looking to place – we were looking for the experience, exposure to four-year programs for our student-athletes, and becoming familiar with the range as we will shoot at New Pioneer multiple times this fall, including the ICCAC State Championship. Every single team member contributed in one way or another and to me that was a win and fantastic to see."
Sophomore Carson Abrams (Oskaloosa, IA/Pella Christian) proved to be the Warriors' top gun with 303/350 targets throughout the two-day event. Cooper Clark (Story City, IA/Roland Story) connected on 299 targets followed by Johnathon Boender's (Oskaloosa, IA/Pella Christian) 298 targers. Aidan Eischen (New Sharon, IA/North Mahaska) and Zane Kirubakaran (Ottumwa, IA/Ottumwa) rounded out the top-five with 297 and 289 targets, respectively.
The Warriors saw their top two trap guns, Haley Byrge (Chilton, WI/Chilton) and Jordan Patterson (Cambridge, IA/Ballard) both connect on 95 targets as the Warriors produced a team total of 471 in the discipline.
Abrams and Eischen led the way for Indian Hills in the skeet discipline with rounds of 97 while Abrams totaled a team-high 40 super sporting targets.
Byrge tallied 252 total targets while Emma Adams (Oskaloosa, IA/Oskaloosa) proved to be the top female throughout the weekend with 275 total targets, including a season-best 95 skeet targets.
"Our trap scores were a bit down from last week, however, we learned what we need to do next time as the rhythm was just off the first round or two, but once we figured it out we were able to settle in and finish strong," Stalzer added. "I was impressed with our skeet scores and how our team skeet score was actually higher in skeet than it was in trap. Carson and Emma (Adams) had huge outings, both firing 97's. For not having the opportunity to shoot sporting clays much, I was also pleased with our performance there. We will get better as the year goes on and as we get more experience, however, Cooper finishing the day with an 80 & Johnathon shooting a 79 was great to see. The team is feeling good going into our shoot this Friday at the Mahaska County Ikes as we host the ICCAC East Division regular season championships in the disciplines of skeet and sporting clays."
