Centerville, IA – Freshman Abigail Querida Verdejo Rivero (Stillwater, OK/Stillwater) has been named the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Women's Wrestler of the Week after a standout performance at the Avila Women's Eagle Open on Sunday.
In just her second outing of the year, Rivero dominated the 117lb bracket to take home top honors for the Warriors. The freshman posted a 4-0 record at the event, securing two falls and a tech fall along the way. Rivero outscored her first three opponents 25-0 before earning a pin in the finals.
Rivero, ranked No. 10 in the nation in the latest The Open Mat 117lb national rankings, opened up the day with a first round fall in 1:58 before a 7-0 decision in the second round. The freshman needed just 48 seconds of mat time in the semifinals to secure a 10-0 tech fall and punch her ticket to the championship bout.
In the finals, Rivero fell behind early to Ottawa University's (KS) Sigrun Metzger, but earned a second round fall to secure the top spot on the podium.
Through two tournaments on the year, Rivero has posted a 9-1 record with four pins and three tech falls.
The Warriors now head into the holiday break and will return to action January 14 for an ICCAC dual at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, IA.
