Ottumwa, IA – Sophomores Piper Nelson (Atkins, IA/Benton) and Asialin Powell (Des Moines, IA/Roosevelt) of the Indian Hills Volleyball squad have been named the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Athletes of the Week, announced by the conference office Tuesday afternoon.
The duo powered the Warriors to three wins on the court last week, including an impressive sweep over ICCAC foe Iowa Western Community College to go along with a pair of wins in Torrington, WY. Indian Hills moved to 13-5 overall on the year, and 1-0 in league play.
Nelson lands her second consecutive ICCAC DI Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week honor after pacing the offense for the Warriors. The sophomore tallied 68 kills in five matches on the week, including a career-high 18 finishers in the finale vs. Eastern Wyoming Community College, adding 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the season.
Nelson tallied double-digit kill totals in four of the team's five matches last week. The sophomore produced a solid performance in a five-set match vs. Central Wyoming Community College, boasting 13 kills, a career-high 17 digs, and three service aces.
Nelson currently leads the ICCAC with 178 kills on the year while her 165 digs are good enough for fourth overall.
Defensively, Powell starred for the Warriors once again. The sophomore tallied 103 digs on the week for an average of 5.4 digs/set. Powell saved her most dominant performance of the year for the weekend finale with a career-high 28 digs vs. Eastern Wyoming. For her efforts, Powell surpassed 600-career digs over the course of the past two seasons for the Warriors.
On the year, Powell has produced nine matches with at least 20 digs. Powell now ranks eighth overall in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) with 330 digs and 5.16 digs/set.
Indian Hills returns home for a pair of matches at the Hellyer Center this week. The Warriors will host Southeastern Community College at 7:00 PM Tuesday night before welcoming Jefferson College (MO) at 6:00 PM Friday.
