Torrington, WY – No. 16 Indian Hills Volleyball capped off its Wyoming trip with a pair of victories on Saturday afternoon to finish the Lancer Invitational 2-2. The Warriors knocked off Western Wyoming Community College in the opener before holding off host Eastern Wyoming Community College in the finale.
One day removed from dropping a pair of matches at the Lancer Invite, the Warriors battled back to secure two victories on its final day in Torrington. The Warriors defeated Western Wyoming in straights, 25-22, 25-17, 25-23 before taking a thriller over Eastern Wyoming, 19-25, 25-17, 19-25, 33-31, and 15-8. The Warriors, ranked No. 16 in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) DI Volleyball Poll, move to 13-5 overall on the year.
The Warriors used a strong offensive approach in the opener vs. Western Wyoming to start the day on a high note. As a team, the Warriors tallied 45 kills, led by sophomore Piper Nelson's (Atkins, IA/Benton) game-high 13 kills. Fellow sophomore Luana Silva Ferreira (Guimaraes, Portgual/Martins Sarmento) tallied nine kills in 13 attempts with just one error in the match as the Warriors scored the victory in their first-ever meeting with the Mustangs.
In the nightcap vs. Eastern Wyoming, the Warriors battled back-and-forth with the Lancers in a five-set thriller. In large part due to a career-high 18 kills from Nelson, the Warriors rallied late to knock off Eastern Wyoming and secure its second win of the day. Nelson was joined by Ferreira who posted 13 kills while sophomore Joanna Pawlik (Lublin, Poland/Nauczycieli Tajnego Nauczania) added 12 kills.
Sophomore Asialin Powell (Des Moines, IA/Roosevelt) starred on defense for the Warriors with a career-high 28 digs. Powell now ranks sixth in the nation with 330 digs on the year after a standout performance over the weekend that saw the defensive specialist tally 82 digs over the four matches.
Sophomore Ana Luiza Caminha Matos (Betim, Brazil/Augusto de Lima) paced the offense once again as the Warriors' primary setter. Luiza tallied match-highs of 44 and 47 assist in consecutive contests today, and a total of 147 assists throughout the two-day event. Luiza now ranks second in the nation with 546 assists on the year
On the weekend, sophomore Aleksandra Oles (Tomaszów Lubelski, Poland/1 LO Tomaszów Lubelski) tallied 12 service aces, including five in the win over Western Wyoming on Saturday. The sophomore now ranks eighth overall in the nation with 39 service aces on the year.
