Belleville, IL – The No. 15 nationally ranked Indian Hills Volleyball squad is set for the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) DI Volleyball Midwest B District Tournament. The Warriors head to Southwestern Illinois College for the two-day, six-team national qualifier.

Postseason competition has arrived for the Indian Hills Volleyball squad as the Warriors earned a first-round bye in the NJCAA DI Volleyball Midwest B District Tournament with a chance to automatically qualify for the NJCAA DI Volleyball National Championship.

HOW WE GOT HERE

Indian Hills captured its third consecutive Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) regular season title by taking two out of three matchups from Iowa Western Community College to earn the first-round bye in upcoming District tournament.

  • Indian Hills posted a 23-9 record in the regular season, the 10th time head coach Lyndsey Michel has guided the Warriors to at lest 20 wins in 13 seasons.
  • The Warriors posted an 11-6 overall record in neutral site matches this year and are 5-3 in true road matches.
  • Indian Hills closed out the regular season having won six consecutive matches, dropping just four sets along the way.
  • The Warriors head into the postseason ranked No. 15 in the national polls

SERVICE NOTES

  • Indian Hills enters postseason play ranked seventh in the nation with 1,527 kills.
  • The Warriors also rank in the top-10 in the NJCAA in assists (5th), points (6th), and aces (7th).
  • The Warriors have won at least one match at the NJCAA District Tournament in each of the last 16 seasons.
  • Indian Hills has advanced to the NJCAA District Championship match in each of the last six seasons, winning three titles (2023, 2022, and 2019).
  • The Warriors have won 31 of 39 sets over the team's last 11 District tournament matches.
  • Indian Hills has advanced to the national tournament five times in program history - 2023, 2022, 2019, 2005, and 2004.

MICHEL'S NOTES

Head coach Lyndsey Michel leads the Warriors into the postseason with a third consecutive trip to the national tournament in sight.

"We are so excited to get back to work. While we've had too many days off, we have been playing great volleyball. We've been busy watching game film and putting those things into our practice plans. Looking forward to executing them in the semifinals for an opportunity to get to the District championship match on Sunday." 

WARRIORS TO WATCH

Indian Hills returns six individuals from last year's top-10 finish at the NJCAA tournament team while nine freshman are seeking their first trip to nationals.

  • Returning All-American Sara Van Gisteren (Leuth, Netherlands/Young Talent Academy ROC Nijmegen) has left her mark on the Indian Hills program as the sophomore ranks fourth all-time in school history with 1,013 kills. Van Gisteren currently ranks second in the nation with 560 kills and is one of just two players in the last two seasons to obtain at least 450 kills each year.
  • Sophomore Ana Carolina Westerich (Blumenau, Brazil/Colégio Energia) continues to pace the offense for the Warriors and currently ranks second in the nation with 1,244 assists. Westerich ranks fourth all-time in school history with 2,576 career assists.
  • Sabrina Nogueira Da Silva (São Paulo, Brazil/Colégio Campos Salles) ranks sixth nationally heading into the postseason with 586 digs and now ranks fourth in school history with 1,229 digs.
  • Daniela De Los Santos Castillo (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/Colegio los Clavelines) has made an impact for the Warrior defense in 2024 and currently ranks 10th in the nation with 126 total blocks on the year.

SCOUTING THE FIELD

The NJCAA Midwest District B Tournament is one of two postseason tournaments comprised of teams from Iowa (Region 11), Illinois (Region 4 and Region 24) and Missouri (Region 16). The NJCAA Midwest District A Tournament, hosted in by Vincennes University in Vincennes, IN, takes place November 8-9 with an automatic bid to the national tournament also on the line.

  • Indian Hills and Olive-Harvey earned first-round byes to the NJCAA Midwest B District Tournament after winning their respective regular season titles.
  • The Warriors have seen just one opponent in the bracket during the regular season, a 3-2 loss to Mineral Area on October 12.
  • Lake Land (26-6) enters the postseason tournament with the most wins in the bracket.
  • Olive-Harvey (16-24) serves as the lone team outside of Indian Hills to enter the weekend on a winning streak, having won three in a row.
  • Southwestern Illinois (24-13) reached the NJCAA Region 24 Championship match, falling to Vincennes.
  • Mineral Area (19-8) is 5-0 this year vs. teams in the bracket.
  • Wabash Valley (17-20) is 1-4 this year vs. teams in the bracket.

WHAT'S AT STAKE

A third consecutive trip to the national tournament is on the line for the Warriors as Indian Hills has captured each of the last two NJCAA Midwest District Championships. The Warriors, who have competed at the national tournament five times, will be seeking its first three-peat in program history.
