Ottumwa, IA – Sophomores Sara Van Gisteren (Leuth, Netherlands/Young Talent Academy ROC Nijmegen) and Daniela De Los Santos Castillo (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/Colegio los Clavelines) of the No. 11 nationally ranked Indian Hills Volleyball team have swept the weekly Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) DI Volleyball Athlete of the Week awards, announced Tuesday evening.
Van Gisteren lands her second consecutive ICCAC offensive honor to start the year, and fourth award of her Indian Hills career while Castillo has been recognized as the defensive player of the week for the first time in her career. The duo helped the Warriors to four wins last week, including three at the McCook Invite in McCook, NE.
Van Gisteren continued to score at will to open her sophomore campaign. The outside hitter tallied 76 kills in six matches last week, including 21 finishers in the team's home opener against DMACC on Tuesday night at the Hellyer Center. Van Gisteren also put together 17 kills vs. Hutchinson Community College (KS) and 14 in a 3-0 sweep of Hill College (TX).
The sophomore has now put together nine matches in the team's first 11 contests with double-digit kill totals. Van Gisteren currently sits atop the national leaderboard with 173 kills and 197.0 points.
Castillo proved to be a force on the defensive front last week for the Warriors. The sophomore tallied 17 total blocks on the week, including three solo stops. Castillo put together a personal best performance with six block assists against Hutchinson.
Castillo, who has emerged as a defensive threat to opposing teams early on in her sophomore campaign, currently ranks fourth in the nation with 39 total blocks.
Indian Hills returns to action Thursday night at the Hellyer Center with a home date against Southeastern Community College. First serve is set for 7:00 PM.
