Ottumwa -- The Indian Hills volleyball team kept its season-long roll going on Wednesday night with a pair of victories, dispatching the Grand View and Cornell JV teams in three sets each. The Warriors are 18-1 for the season, heading into action at the East Central (Mo.) Tournament this weekend.
IHCC swept Grand View JV 25-23, 25-16 and 26-24 and followed it up with a sweep of Cornell, winning by scores of 25-10, 25-21 and 25-20.
After IHCC took a quick 4-0 lead in the opening set against Grand View, the Vikings regrouped and led for most of the set. Indian Hills rallied from five points down to win, the final point coming on a Jessica Eekhoff ace serve. The Warriors ran off nine straight points to quickly take control in the second set. Once again, Grand View came back, this time with a 5-0 run to begin the third set. They led the rest of the set until IHCC pulled even at 24-all, then took the set on a kill by Kameo Pope and a double-block.
Tamara Merseli had a good overall match for IHCC with a team-high 16 kills, two blocks and nine digs. Pope and Nora Buvarp each had five blocks.
Indian Hills didn't waste any time in taking control of the match with Cornell, sprinting away to an 11-1 lead in the first set. The huge margin at the end of that set didn't carry over, though, as the next two sets were much tighter. The long night, which included a match between Grand View and Cornell in between the Warriors' action, came to an end with an ace serve by IHCC's Lauren Streets, one of five she had in the match.
Merseli again led in kills with 10 and Pope accumulated nine kills and seven blocks. Sarah Ryder paced IHCC with 14 digs.
The Warriors only have one home match remaining and it will be a big one -- a battle with top-ranked Iowa Western on Oct. 8.
