Mattoon, Ill. -- Indian Hills defeated three Illinois teams, but couldn't get past old foe Iowa Western and the Warriors saw their season come to an end in the championship match of the District D Super Regional over the weekend.
The Warriors defeated Kaskaskia and Lake Land on Friday, winning both matches in three sets, before running into Iowa Western for the first time. After the Reivers took the first two sets in Saturday's match, IHCC came back to win the third set, 25-21, and was one point away from evening the match in the next set, leading 24-20. But Iowa Western showed why they are the No. 1 ranked team in the country, closing out the Warriors with a 7-2 run to take the set 27-25.
Indian Hills recovered to knock off John A. Logan 3-0 on Sunday to get another shot at Iowa Western, needing to win twice to take the region crown. The Reivers, however, fought off a challenge from the Warriors and won 25-17, 27-25 and 25-20 to grab the championship and a trip to the national tournament.
Indian Hills finished the season with a match record of 32-7, with four of the losses at the hands of Iowa Western.
Indian Hills coach Lyndsey Michel, although disappointed with the results, couldn't fault the effort from her squad. "We fought so hard for every point (against Iowa Western)," Michel said. "This was a great group that wasn't ready for the season to be over. With the freshmen we have returning we will be ready to fight for a spot in the national tournament next year."
