Split for Warriors at Jefferson Tourney

Hillsboro, Mo. -- The Indian Hills volleyball team won two and lost two at the Jefferson College Halloween Classic over the weekend.

The Warriors lost to the host school 3-2 before defeating Seward (Kans.) 3-1 on Friday; IHCC gained an impressive straight-set win over Hutchinson (Kans.) on Saturday before losing a 3-1 match to Illinois Central.

In the match with Jefferson, Indian Hills battled back to even things at two sets each with a 25-22 victory in the fourth set, before falling 15-7 in the decisive set. IHCC's Tamara Merseli had her third consecutive set with 20+ kills notching a team-high 22 for the Warriors. She added 17 digs and a block. Lauren Streets had 20 digs and 14 kills, one more kill than Kameo Pope.

Against Seward, Sarah Ryder had a team-best 25 digs. Merseli pounded 18 kills, two more than Pope, who paced IHCC with five blocks.

Hutchinson had received votes in the latest NJCAA Division I poll, but was no match for the Warriors, who won 25-22, 25-18 and 25-12. Again, it was Merseli who led in kills with 16 and she was tops in digs with 17. Pope and setter Katie Soddy each had three blocks. Soddy had a whopping 204 assists over the four matches.

Merseli capped a tourney in which she amassed 74 kills by getting 18 against Illinois Central, ranked third in Division II. Mirela Vasconselos had three blocks and Ryder 13 digs, but the Warriors lost for only the fourth time all season in 31 matches.

Indian Hills stays on the road with a trip to play Iowa Lakes on Monday night.
