MARQUEZ, WHITEHEAD EARN ICCAC ATHLETE OF THE WEEK HONORS

Centerville, IA – Following the program's first-ever national championship, freshmen Andrew Marquez (Rock Island, IL/Rock Island) and Gavyn Whitehead (New Castle, IN/New Castle) of the Indian Hills Men's Wrestling squad have been named the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Athlete of the Week.

Marquez and Whitehead captured individual national titles, the first two championships in school history as the Warriors ran away with the NJCAA Men's Wrestling National Championship. Along with the two national titles, Indian Hills posted 182.0 team points, the most at a national championship in NJCAA history.

Competing in the 141lb bracket, Whitehead put together a remarkable run through the tournament to finish atop the podium. Competing as the No. 4 overall seed, Whitehead went 6-0 at the championship, including three overtime victories. Whithead opened the tournament with a dominant 24-5 tech fall in the opening round before earning a thrilling 14-11 overtime victory in the Round of 32. Whitehead produced a fall in just 42 seconds to punch his ticket to the quarterfinals.

The freshman earned another extra session victory with a 12-9 win over fifth-seeded Ely Olberding of Southeast Community College (NE) before knocked off ninth-seeded Colby Klinger of Southwestern Michigan Community College. In the championship bout, Whitehead scored a three-point takedown in overtime to upend second-seeded Dmitri Alarcon of Western Wyoming Community College to become the program's first-ever national champion.

Marquez locked up the 197lb national championship with an impressive performance as the No. 2 overall seed. Marquez ran through all five matches, outscoring his opponents 46-15 along the way.

Marquez defeated No. 10 seeded Victor Montoya of Fort Hayes Tech (KS) in the quarterfinals before dropping third-seeded Ghee Rachal of Triton College (IL) in the semifinals. Like Whitehead, Marquez provided the dramatics in the championship round with an overtime victory, securing a late three-point takedown to knock off fourth-seeded Coen Grimm of Iowa Central Community College.
