WARRIORS SECURE TOP-10 DUAL IN ROCHESTER

Rochester, MN – No. 2 nationally ranked Indian Hills Men's Wrestling went on the road to secure a top-10 dual win, dropping No. 8 ranked Rochester Community & Technical College 37-6 on Friday night. The Warriors remain unbeaten on the year in dual action at 7-0.

Indian Hills earned its third win over a top-10 team this year by taking nine of 10 matches from the Yellowjackets. With the win, the Warriors extend their school record winning streak to 11 matches. Indian Hills has now held four of its opponents to single digits this year while winning all seven duals by double-digits.

"Overall good team performance against a solid Rochester team," stated head coach Cole Spree. "It is exciting to see the guys improve each time we compete. As a coach, that is all we can ask for."

Sophomore All-American Isaac Gibbs (Propser, TX/Rock Hill) earned his second consecutive dual win this week for his 39th career victory, tied for second-most in school history. Trailing 3-1 early on in the opening period against No. 5 ranked Tyson Wilson, Gibbs regained the lead with a last-second four-point takedown to close out the second frame. Gibbs ran away in the third period for a 20-23 major decision.

Sophomore Riley Bettich (Stevensville, MI/Crown Point), the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the nation, earned his second dual win of the week at 133lbs with a 6-3 decision over No. 9 ranked Jake Aho. All square at three in the closing seconds of the third period, Bettich earned a three-point takedown to rally for the win.

Freshman Gavyn Whitehead (New Castle, IN/New Castle) remained unbeaten on the year with a 12-4 major decision at 141lbs over No. 9 Tucker Ginther. Whitehead led 3-1 after the opening period before pulling away late in the match to move to 9-0 on the year.

In just his third dual action of the year, freshman Shehabeldin Mohamed (Alexandria, Egypt/Smouha Military) secured a major upset at 149lbs, taking down No. 2 nationally ranked Cohen Wise. Mohamed struck first with a three-point takedown before rattling off 10 points in the second period to pull away. Mohamed scored a four-point takedown with less than a minute remaining in the third to secure the tech fall, 21-4.

A tight battle at 157lbs saw sophomore Brice Coleman (Indianapolis, IN/Indiana Tech) prevail down the stretch for the Warriors. Coleman scored an escape in the opening round and maintained the 1-0 advantage through the remainder of the match. The sophomore added nearly two minutes of riding time to earn the victory and push the Warrior lead to 19-0.

Mohammed Tarek Abdelhady (Alexandria, Egypt/Sports Military School) made it six consecutive wins to open the night for the Warriors with a victory at 165lbs. The freshman earned a pair of three-point takedowns in the opening frame to pull away early. Mohammed secured the tech fall in the closing seconds to take the match, 19-4.

Freshman Cinsere Clark (Des Moines, IA/Valley) pushed the team lead to 29-0 with a victory at 174lbs. Clark controlled the match from the get-go, taking a 4-0 lead through the first period and an 11-1 edge through two before earning the tech fall, 17-2 with 1:30 remaining in the third period.

Jaquan East (Kokomo, IN/Kokmo), ranked No. 2 in the nation at 174lbs, showed his versatility once again by wrestling up to 184lbs. East handled Rochester's Leighton Robb with ease, building a 9-1 lead after the first period on his way to a 20-3 tech fall with 1:32 remaining in the third period.

Freshman Naasir Edmonds (Virginia Beach, VA/ Landstown) closed out the night a dominant showing at 285lbs, taking down No. 4 nationally ranked Cito Tuttle. Edmonds and Tuttle battled to a 1-1 score through three periods before Edmonds came out on top with a point in overtime to secure the upset.

"It was a lot of fun seeing two of our freshmen secure really big wins in their career with Shehab and Naasir taking out two highly ranked wrestlers," Spree added.

The Warriors return to action December 14 for the annual Art Kraft Memorial in River Grove, IL, the team's final competition to close out the 2024 calendar year.
