Pittsburg, KS – Sophomore Aurel Tchanbi (Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire/College Heleis) has been selected as the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Midwest Region Track Athlete of the Year, announced Saturday at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Indoor National Championships.
One of the top sprinters in the nation throughout the indoor season, Tchanbi was recently recognized as the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Indoor Track Athlete of the Year after winning two individual titles in the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash at the NJCAA Region XI Indoor Championships.
Tchanbi also took home first-place finishes in both of the events as a freshman in 2021.
Tchanbi, who was recognized as the USTFCCCA Athlete of the Year midway through the national championship event on Saturday went on to place second overall at the national meet in the men's 200-meter dash and fifth overall in the men's 60-meter dash to earn All-American honors. Tchanbi set a school record in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.70 and posted the second-best mark of all-time in the 200-meter dash with a time of 20.94.
Tchanbi joins teammate Aliyah Simmons of the women's program who was recognized as the female USTFCCCA Midwest Region Indoor Track Athlete of the Year.
