Ottumwa -- A second-half goal by Indian Hills' Jose Andres Gonzalez broke a 1-1 tie and the IHCC freshman added an insurance goal five minutes later as the Warriors closed out the regular season with a 3-1 win over Northeast (Neb.) CC Saturday afternoon at the IHCC field.
The win sends the Warriors into next week's first postseason matchup with Iowa Central with a 6-11 overall record and a 5-9 conference ledger.
It was a scoreless first half with the two defenses dominating play. IHCC's Victor Gabriel snapped the scoreless tie in the 60th minute on a pass from Joao Brasil.
Northeast knotted things up when Kevin Koffi found the net off a deflection for the Hawks' only score of the game.
Two minutes later Andres Gonzalez, with an assist from Brasil, put the Warriors on top, before he added an unassisted goal for the final margin.
It was a very satisfying win for Indian Hills, according to coach Jared Beauchamp. "This match was very important," the first-year IHCC coach stated. "It does a lot for us in terms of getting our guys to feel good about themselves going into the tournament."
The Warriors outshot the Hawks 19-5 with IHCC keeper Phillipe Catao forced to make only one save for the game.
Indian Hills will take on Iowa Central in their first postseason test this Wednesday in Fort Dodge. The match will start at 3:00 with the winner advancing to the Region 11 semifinals this weekend in Des Moines.
