Mason City, Ia. -- A slow start doomed the Indian Hills men's soccer team in its game against conference rival NIACC on Tuesday, the Warriors giving up two goals in the first 15 minutes and dropping a 3-1 decision to the Trojans.
The contest came less than a week after NIACC had battled top-ranked Iowa Western to a scoreless draw and IHCC missed an opportunity to put together a two-game winning streak, having knocked off Hesston College on Sunday.
NIACC's Marco Carillo scored less than two minutes into the match and an Oscar Nieves goal in the 14th minutes gave the host team a quick 2-0 lead.
"We came out slow and gave up two goals off corner kicks early on," said IHCC coach Doug Seigle. "After that we settled down and started to get into a rhythm. The second half we controlled the play of the game, but gave up a counter-attack goal to go down 3-0."
The Warriors bounced back, however, with several good scoring opportunities before finally capitalizing on a scoring chance in the 69th minute. Arial Lopez, a freshman from West Liberty, Ia., scored the IHCC goal off a header with an assist from Jonathan Silva, a sophomore from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).
Seigle said his squad continued to press the attack the rest of the way, getting several good looks at the goal and hitting the crossbar once. Unfortunately, the Warriors ran out of time without getting another tally.
Indian Hills used both Alex Alvarez and Colton Mihalovich in goal and they combined for eight saves. The Warriors had seven shots on goal.
"We left the game with several positives," Seigle said, "although we are disappointed in the loss. We fought hard for 90 minutes, but those two big mistakes early in the game put us in a hole that was too much to overcome."
The Warriors, now 1-4 for the season, host Iowa Central at 2:00 on Saturday.
