Centerville, IA – On the heels of a breakout performance to open his sophomore campaign, Diego Mendez (Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico/ESCAED) of the Indian Hills Baseball squad has been named the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) DI Baseball Player of the Week.
Mendez helped power the Warriors to a pair of wins to open the new year in Millington, TN over the week. The sophomore infielder posted a .714 batting average with nine RBI and a pair of extra base hits to pace the offense. Defensively, Mendez was flawless in the infield for the Warriors.
The sophomore opened up the year in impressive fashion, going 2-3 with an RBI in the season opener, an 11-6 win over Olney College (IL) on Friday. Mendez followed up with a 1-2 effort while tacking on an RBI and another run scored against Lincoln Land Community College (IL) on Saturday.
Mendez saved his star performance for the weekend finale against Kaskaskia College (IL). Mendez produced a career-best performance at the plate to lead Indian Hills to a 10-0 victory in five innings.
The sophomore opened up the game by delivering a three-run double in the top half of the first to set the tone. Just two frames later, Mendez delivered his first-career grand slam, a shot to left to extend the Warrior lead and put the game out of reach.
Mendez finished the game with a career-high seven RBI and the two extra base hits.
The weekly honor from the ICCAC is the first career accolade for Mendez.
Next up for the Warriors is a trip to Hot Springs, AR to take on National Park College (AR) for a four-game series February 19-20.
