Centerville -- Christian Torres and Joel Booker, the two former Indian Hills standouts who were both taken in this month's Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, have made memorable professional debuts within the past three days.
Torres, selected by the Texas Rangers in the 30th round of the MLB draft, pitched in relief for the Spokane Indians against Vancouver in a Class A Northwest League contest on June 18. The lefty Torres pitched a scoreless inning, allowing one hit. He had two solid years on the mound at Faulkner University after leaving IHCC.
Booker batted leadoff and played center field for the Chicago White Sox team in the Arizona Rookie League on Monday, going 2-for-5 with a run scored and two RBIs in his first-ever game as a pro. Booker was tabbed by the Sox in the draft's 22nd round following a stellar senior season at the University of Iowa.
The night after Torres appeared for Spokane, Nick Green, another ex-Indian Hills player, started for the first time this season for the Indians. A 7th round draft choice by Texas in 2014, Green took the loss, but all three runs he allowed were unearned. He gave up three hits in four innings with six strikeouts and no walks.
Indian Hills fans will have the opportunity the rest of the summer to follow the progress of these three former IHCC stars, along with the exploits of the three other one-time Falcons playing in the pros -- Irving Falu, Jordan Piche and Travis Neubeck.
The 33-year old Falu started this year in the Mexican League with Guerreros de Oaxaca before electing to become a free agent on June 4. He was signed by the Kansas City Royals the following day and assigned to their Triple-A team, the Omaha Storm Chasers. In Omaha, he returns to a place where he played parts of six seasons and became a huge fan favorite. Through his first 14 games in this go-round in the Pacific Coast League Falu is batting .254 with two doubles, two homers and nine RBIs in Omaha. He batted .359 in the Mexican League in 52 games.
Piche, who pitched last year in Burlington, Iowa, is currently with the Inland Empire 66ers, the Los Angeles Angels affiliate in the Class-A Advanced California League. He has compiled a 2-3 record with a 3.00 ERA in 24 games, all in relief. Piche, who came to Indian Hills from Greeley, Colorado, has walked only eight and struck out 28 in 33 innings.
Neubeck, who led the Falcons in victories in 2015 in his lone year in Centerville after transferring to IHCC from the Air Force Academy, made his 2016 debut Monday for the Batavia Muckdogs in the short-season Class-A New York-Penn League. Neubeck, the Miami Marlins 7th round draft pick a year ago, started and went five shutout innings, permitting only three hits with no walks or strikeouts. It's his second year at Batavia. He was 1-3 with a 4.03 ERA in 10 games in 2015.
