Falcons Divide a Pair With MCC-Maple Woods

Centerville -- Indian Hills used a strong pitching effort from the freshman duo of Jarret Cronin and Jacob Thiessen and a couple of RBIs from Ricardo Ortiz to gain a split in a doubleheader with MCC-Maple Woods on Tuesday. After dropping the first game, 3-2, Cronin and Thiessen combined to hold the visitors to two hits in game two and the Falcons prevailed, 6-1.

It was Indian Hills that was limited to two hits in the opener, a single by Lane Harvey and a double by Dillon Nelson. Maple Woods led 3-0 after 5 1/2 innings before the Falcons pushed across two runs in the bottom of the 6th. But they couldn't score the equalizer and lost the one-run decision.

Harvey and Wyatt Aaberg scored the runs for IHCC and Grant Walker picked up the lone RBI.

Matt Lasley pitched 4 2/3 innings as the starter and took the loss. Zachary Lauzon threw 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief.

In the nightcap, Cronin went the first 5 1/3 innings, allowing only two hits and one run with a walk and four Ks. Thiessen came on with one out in the 6th and retired all five batters he faced, two on strikeouts.

Ortiz got the scoring started with a 1st inning single and added another RBI later. Ryan Shull, Aaberg, Kin Fernandez and Olivier Basabe had the other RBIs for the Falcons. Luis Gimenez and Nelson each scored twice. Aaberg and Jose Vargas also scored.

IHCC put single runs on the board in the 1st, 2nd and 5th innings and then tallied three in the 6th to put the game away.

The Falcons will entertain Southwestern CC in a single game on Thursday before hosting Muscatine CC in a four-game weekend series at Pat Daugherty Field. It's Parents' Weekend with doubleheaders starting at 1:00 Saturday and noon Sunday.
