CENTERVILLE --- A player on this past season's Indian Hills Community College team and a former Falcons pitcher were chosen in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Nick Green, who recently completed his freshman season at IHCC, was taken by the Texas Rangers in the 7th round. Former IHCC standout Jordan Piche was selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the 28th round.
It was the second time that Green, a native of Fountain, Colorado, was picked in the Draft. He was a 35th round choice of the New York Yankees following his senior year of high school. He opted to attend Indian Hills instead of signing last summer. The right-hander posted a 3-1 record and 2.97 ERA with 34 strikeouts in 36 innings pitched for the Falcons this spring. His best game came in his last appearance of the season, a seven-inning no-hitter against Marshalltown.
Green earned second-team All-Region honors.
Piche joined the Kansas Jayhawks as a walk-on after two successful seasons at Indian Hills. He made an immediate impression when he was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and was selected to the All-Big 12 first team after a junior season in which he compiled a 6-4 record and 1.68 ERA with 12 saves as the Jayhawks' closer.
Early in the 2014 season, Piche was moved into the role of No. 1 starter for Kansas and he ended the year with a 6-5 mark and 4.59 ERA. He was named to the All-Big 12 honorable mention team.
At Indian Hills, Piche was 2-2 with a 3.00 ERA as a freshman and 9-4 and 2.66 as a sophomore, when he was first-team All-Region after converting to the starting rotation.
