Garden City, Kansas -- The Indian Hills Falcons posted an impressive victory in their season-opening four-game series with Garden City CC, but then dropped the final three games of the set with the Bronc Busters as IHCC got the 2014 campaign underway over the weekend.
Nick Green and Cody Hinson combined to limit Garden City to four hits in Indian Hills' 6-1 win in the first game. Meanwhile, the Falcons pounded out 15 hits, including three each by Joel Booker, Mitch Langer and Kyle Keck. Langer had a pair of doubles and was one of four Falcons to drive in a run. Six different players scored once.
Green allowed only two hits and an unearned run in four innings, striking out three. Hinson, like Green a freshman, went the final five innings, throwing two-hit, shutout baseball with a couple of strikeouts.
Leadoff hitter Edgar Legron had two hits, scored once and drove in a run.
However, after their six-run, 15-hit performance in game one, the Falcons struggled to score the rest of the series. They were blanked twice on Saturday, 3-0 and 6-0, and dropped a 10-2 decision on Sunday.
In Saturday's opener, IHCC hurlers Christian Torres and Jake Klancnik gave up only four hits, but Garden City's JJ Benes fired a four-hit shutout. The Busters got a single run against Torres in the 1st and two tallies off Klancnik in the 5th.
Lebron, Dario Polanco, Mike Levar and Joel Fuentes had the hits, all singles, for the Falcons.
IHCC was held to three hits in the nightcap -- a double by Lebron and singles by Jose Valdez and Levar.
Only two of Garden City's six runs were earned. Started Derek Kawlewski went four innings, allowing only two hits and one earned run with three Ks. Jose Marin also permitted two hits and an earned run in two innings of relief.
Indian Hills starter Alsis Herrera was outstanding in his initial appearance of the season in Sunday's contest. In three innings, he allowed only one hit, didn't walk anyone and fanned five.
Garden City put the game away with seven runs in the bottom of the 8th after leading leading 3-2 entering the inning. Only one of the seven runs was earned.
Polanco and Keck had two-hit games with Polanco slugging a triple. Ben Reznicek, Lebron, Polanco and Levar all had doubles. Back-to-back two-baggers by Reznicek and Lebron accounted for the first IHCC run in the 5th, tying the game at 1-1. Joel Booker had an RBI single to account for the other run for the Falcons.
Indian Hills is slated to play four games in Harrison, Arkansas this weekend, two each against North Arkansas and Mesabi Range.
