Ottumwa --- With practice for the men's soccer squad at Indian Hills getting underway this week, a new assistant coach for the Warriors is busy helping to prepare the resurgent squad for the upcoming season.
Derek Faulkner will assist head coach Jon Fridal with the IHCC men, who last year went 11-7 and advanced to the semifinals of the Region 11 postseason tournament while increasing their goals total from 29 to 55.
Faulkner comes to Indian Hills from Oregon State University, where he was an assistant men's coach for one season, helping with scouting, recruiting and fundraising, in addition to other duties. Prior to that, he was at California State University-Los Angeles, his alma mater, as a men's assistant for three seasons. The team won its region in one of those years and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament the following season. The newest addition to the IHCC men's program also has experience coaching from youth teams to a master division team at a number of different stops in southern California.
Faulkner played both soccer and basketball at Cal State LA and also competed for two years at Santa Rosa Junior College – he was the team captain and first-team all-conference as a sophomore – and one year for the Los Angeles Misioneros.
He earned a bachelor's degree in kinesiology from Cal State LA and a master's in kinesiology from California Baptist University in Riverside.
