The Indian Hills Community College athletic department has recognized sophomore Akean Shackleford (men’s soccer) and freshman Traci Ervin (women’s cross country) as October’s student-athletes of the month. This accolade honors student-athletes who have demonstrated outstanding work in their respective sport and in the classroom.
Ervin, a freshman from Mediapolis, Iowa has solidified herself as a top seven runner for the nationally-ranked women’s cross country team. What’s most impressive about the freshman harrier is the dramatic improvement she has shown. From the Region XI Time Trial on August 26th to Region XI Championship Meet on October 29th, Ervin dropped a whopping four minutes and six seconds from her 5k time, finishing 38th overall in 23:10. “The amount of time that Traci has dropped from the beginning of this season is basically unheard of,” said head coach Scott Barnes. “She entered the season as a girl who just wanted to run and be a part of the team, before transforming into a top seven runner on a top 25 team in the nation.” Ervin is enrolled in the Early Childhood Development program at Indian Hills and is equally impressive in her studies as she in on the course. Ervin and her teammates will compete in their final meet on the season November 11th at the 2017 NJCAA National Championships in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
