The Indian Hills Community College athletic department has recognized Joe Kim (golf) and Shalandra Shilling (women’s track and field) as June’s student-athletes of the month. This accolade honors student-athletes who have demonstrated outstanding work in their respective sport and in the classroom.
Shilling, a freshman high jumper from Oskaloosa, Iowa was a two-time ICCAC Women’s Track and Field region champion during the 2017-18 season. Shilling was the track and field program’s first ever Region XI champion following her victory in the high jump at the Region XI indoor track and field championship meet. She defended her title during the Region XI outdoor track and field meet, winning with a jump of 1.58 meters. “Shalandra always knew how to compete in the most important meets,” commented head coach Brent Ewing. “Becoming a two-time region champion as a freshman is very difficult to do in our region.” The NJCAA indoor national qualifier finished the year earning Academic All-Region second team honors.
